Pappy’s Coffee is named for Lehman “Pappy” Sammons—a fun-loving, hard-working entrepreneur whose larger-than-life personality made him a Memphis legend.
After moving to Memphis as a child, Pappy quickly developed an entrepreneurial spirit. In 1910, he opened a hamburger stand, the first step in what would become a remarkable career in the restaurant industry.
Over the years he launched several successful ventures, including Pappy’s and Jimmy’s. Eventually, he combined two houses on Madison Avenue to create one of Memphis’ most famous dining destinations: The Lobster Shack.
The Lobster Shack remained a beloved Memphis landmark for nearly 50 year—a restaurant as memorable and unique as its founder.
Nicknamed “The Mayor of Overton Square,” Pappy was also recognized as one of the oldest active chefs in America. He worked well into his later years and continued greeting customers personally until the age of 100.
The Memphis Press-Scimitar once reported that visitors traveled from across the country to dine at his restaurant. Pappy made every guest feel welcome, greeting them warmly and sharing his love of great food and hospitality.
